Why, AZ, Why Not?

The name “Why” comes from some interesting history. Highway 85 and Highway 86 used to intersect in a Y. The spot became known as “The Y,” and the spelling was changed when residents petitioned for a post office. Three letters were needed to make it official,

A Hidden Gem

There are many local and nearby attractions for those who love to explore! You can find enough “hidden gems” within 100 miles of Why to keep you busy for a lifetime.

Among all the geographic areas of the United States, the Southwest in general and Arizona, in particular, is blessed with a panoramic beauty that almost defies description. Only a limited number of poets, painters, and photographers have been able to do justice to her splendor.

About Why, AZ

Why is a small rural community on the Western border of the Tohono O’odham Indian Nation. It is north of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument in Southern Arizona, 30 miles north of the Mexican Border and 10 miles south of Ajo. Most people know of it because of its interesting name and as a place they drive through on their way to Rocky Point, Mexico.

Explore the Sonoran Desert

The Sonoran Desert is a North American desert which covers large parts of the Southwestern United States in Arizona and California and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California, and Baja California Sur. It is the hottest desert in Mexico. It has an area of 260,000 square kilometers (100,000 sq mi). The western portion of the United States–Mexico border passes through the Sonoran Desert.

Ajo, a Village of Culture and Arts

With its rich tradition as a former copper mining hub, Ajo is a casual town with relaxed charm. Enjoy its mild climate, low humidity, and clear skies. Take in the historic Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, Sonoran Desert flora and fauna and panoramic views. Adventure awaits with plentiful outdoor activities year-round – golf, hiking, bicycling, bird watching, festivals, and events.

The “Why” Senior Citizens Club

The “Why” Senior Citizens Club enhances the lives of seniors by providing: programs, information, access to technology, volunteer opportunities and upkeep of facilities. The events and activities encourage active living and well-being of both permanent and temporary residents in the Why, Arizona community and surrounding area. We do this through the collective strengths, resources and expertise of the people and by the people in the organization.

So, Why Coyote Howls?

Because you don’t have to shovel sunshine!

We Love This Place!

We came to Coyote Howls to meet up with some friends that were staying at Coyote Howls East. We need full hook-up because we travel with a dog that needed A\C, so we made arrangements to stay at the West park. The manager was great, showed us to our spot, and to the wonderful new dog walk. The other RVer’s in the park were friendly and got together in the afternoons, sometimes around a campfire to visit. They wanted to make sure that we were invited to join in with them. We love exploring and the area gave us plenty of places to go. We will stay longer next year!

We Will Return!

What an interesting place. We truly had no idea where we were coming when we headed this way, but when we finally got here, what a surprise. We couldn’t believe all the things there were to do right here in the park and the surrounding area. We played cards, joined in with the local hikers and even got in a golf game in nearby Ajo. We wished we would have been able to stay longer. We aren’t retired yet, but this place is truly a location that we are going to be coming back to when we do. Loved the area, loved the people and loved the desert. We couldn’t get enough of it.

Great Memories!

My sister and brother-in-law brought us here on a visit. When they said they primitive camped, we were a little leery. We have camped all our lives and in some pretty primitive areas but this was just really much nicer than that. They have water, solar and activities to do if you want to. We sat around and visited and watched the wildlife, cooked shrimp on the grill and photographed some of the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen. When we left we said that we needed to go back to work just to get some rest. We will be back every year as long as they will have us.
